Q&A: Ear plugs while swimming.. Are they safe?
Question by Helpme!!!!!!: Ear plugs while swimming.. Are they safe?
Hey! So I recently had a swimmers ear and I had some drops to get rid of it. While I was at the doctor tho, he told me that ear plugs that block your ear canal from water, only make it worse for you in the future… Is that true? My mom insists on me using ear plugs and the doctor says not to use them when you have a normal ear with no infections. Can someone explain to me if ear plugs are bad or not? Thanks!

the doctor is probably right, he is a medical proffesional after all. Taking advice from random people online is a bad idea.(and i know that what i just said counts as advice.

Doctor’s right, and i’ve had others tell me that same thing too.
Invest in some over the counter swimmers ear drops or save some of your prescription. When you feel the aching coming on, treat it asap and that usually heads it off so it doesn’t progress!

Its best not to use ear plugs, especially if they are the kind that go inside of your ear because the water puts pressure on them and can put pressure on your inner ear which is very bad. Listen to your doctor, and if you are really worried about it you can contact an ENT (Ears, Nose, and Throat) Specialist. They have more specific experience and knowledge.
